  1. Baking in the sun…

January 8, 2012 by Chris Grover

These short, dull days of January make it all too easy to forget the summer. However the memories remain, helped by the saturated colours of Ektar 100.

  2. Where have you been?

January 5, 2012 by Chris Grover

Okay, okay, the Christmas-time pics are on the way and I’m hoping for some great BMX shots of the kids. But you know, that’s another thing to love about film – with digi I’d have had them going over the same jump time and time again. With film it’s simple – I’ve finished my 36 and now I can jump on my bike and have fun too!

In the meantime, loaded with barrel distortion from the Nikon 50 1.4 AFS (they assume you’ll shoot it digitally and correct in Lightroom or Photoshop) here’s a wintry window for you on Portra 800 (lovely stuff).

  3. You can only do this on film!!!

December 15, 2011 by Chris Grover

This was shot in the South of France in summer 2011 – forgive me for gratuitous (and rare) use of a polariser! There’s a huge contrast between the deep blue of the sea and the white of the boats, but even a high contrast film like Ektar 100 captures it superbly. You just could not get this amount of detail on most digital cameras…

  4. Roast potatoes with salt and vinegar

December 14, 2011 by Chris Grover

Each year, the village of Debenham, where I live has a Christmas shopping evening. The stores in the village stay open until 8pm and there is carol singing, drinking mulled cyder from local producer Aspall and a barbeque. This year the Vanilla Bakehouse was serving these delicious potatoes – a perfect warming treat with salt and malt vinegar.

  5. Winter Looming

December 13, 2011 by Chris Grover

This is actually from the beginning of 2011, shot on Kodak’s lovely Portra 800. Bring on the snow!

  6. Pastels in Provence

December 10, 2011 by Chris Grover

This just begged to be taken. My Nikon F5 had the wrong film in it – Kodak Ektar 100 - too much saturation and contrast. I really needed the (now discontinued) Portra 160NC that was in the other F5 back at base. This is a completely unretouched minilab scan. Next time I’ll try and hold the camera level!

  7. I love cycling…

December 9, 2011 by Chris Grover

I’ve always been a big fan of photojournalism and today I was reminded of Geoffrey Hiller’s site where he showcases lots of new work. Highly recommended.

I love the blog of Astrid Hagen and whilst I can’t keep up with Astrid’s daily posting (at least not for long) I feel that I ought to post a picture when I can, so here’s Thor Hushovd in September 201 1 in the Tour of Britain. At the time he was world champion, although the Britain Mark Cavendish has taken the title since. The tour came through my village – how cool is that?

  8. Beautiful Bags

December 9, 2011 by Chris Grover

I recently spent a day with renowned florist Paula Pryke at her workshop near Kings Cross station. Paula’s written loads of books on flower arranging and candles, translated into languages ranging from Polish to Russian to Japanese. I couldn’t resist a quick snap of these bags in a corner…

  9. Back in Business!

December 7, 2011 by Chris Grover

I’ve spent the last few hours reclaiming my site from the hacker who disabled the previous version (why, numbskull?) and it’s  great to launch with a funky pic of Bronwyn from Underline the Sky at  a gig in Ipswich.
